Service Center Metals cuts ribbon on new recycling and extrusion plants, adding 125 jobs
September 9, 2023
PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, VIRGINIA – Service Center Metals (SCM) cut the ribbon today on a $127 million expansion that has added 320,000 square feet to the 100-acre campus and includes two new facilities: a billet casting (aluminum recycling) plant, and a new aluminum extrusion plant.
The expansion, completed earlier this year, has added 125 jobs and positions SCM as the most environmentally friendly aluminum extrusions and billet manufacturer in the nation, as well as the largest independent supplier of secondary aluminum billet in North America.
“In 2023, Service Center Metals has set a new standard for responsible American manufacturing by producing the greenest billet in the nation with the hardest working team in the country,” said Scott Kelley, President and CEO of SCM. “Our new state-of-the art casthouse and extrusion plants further position our company as an American manufacturer at the forefront of innovation, sustainability, and community engagement.”
“Service Center Metals is living proof that American manufacturing is alive and well in Virginia. Together, we are demonstrating that the Commonwealth can be a manufacturing industry leader,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin. “I applaud SCM and its leadership for positioning the Tri-Cities region as manufacturing innovators and creating well-paying jobs that support hard-working men and women and their families.”
About the new plants (named after great musicians):
-
Billet casting Plant: Named Cash, the new scrap recycling billet plant uses state-of-art recycling technology and positions SCM as the largest independent consumer of aluminum scrap and producer of secondary billet in North America. The company sources aluminum scrap, which could otherwise be discarded and wind up in landfills, from around the country to produce billets.
The remelt plant’s aluminum billets — large logs of metal used to create machine-grade critical products for transportation, electrical, and machinery applications — are made with 95% recycled aluminum, the highest recycling rate in the industry. “We are reducing waste, conserving resources, and minimizing our carbon footprint,” Kelley said. “Our eco-friendly products align seamlessly with our nation’s environmental demands and solidifies our role as good stewards for generations to come.” The Emerald Eco-Billet® recycled aluminum logs are created in our newest plant’s casting facility.

Extrusion plant. Jimi is SCM’s new aluminum extrusion plant, joining the company’s flagship presses Elvis and The Boss. The new press will significantly increase both SCM’s capacity and capabilities. The company has shipped more than 1.8 billion pounds to customers across America since it began operations in 2003.
Founded in 2002 and beginning operations a year later, Service Center Metals has evolved into a top aluminum extrusion and billet company. SCM produces aluminum rods, bars, shapes, and tube and pipe, all of which are shipped to customers across the U.S. The company is vertically integrated with four plants on its 100-acre campus in Prince George County and employs 378 people. In April 2022, the company opened the SCM Health Center, offering free healthcare services to team members and their families.
